January 1863 Clothing List

While doing research at the Historical Society of Delaware, I found the following in the clothing account for Co. K. It is a list of clothing and prices and gives an idea of the things that the unit was wearing in 1863 which is the year we will be portraying in the upcoming season.

Caps $0.55
Trousers $3.55
Blouses Lined $3.14
Blouses unlined $2.40
Knit Jackets $2.70
Flannel Shirts $1.46
Knit Shirts $1.30
Drawers $0.95
Knit Draws $1.00
Stockings $0.32
Shoes $2.05
Shoes "Peg" $1.48
Great Coat $9.50
Great Coat Straps $0.14
Rubber Blankets $2.55
Woolen Blankets $3.60
Leggins $0.75
Uniform Coats $7.21

Copied from the Clothing Account Book 1862-1864 in the collection of the HSD Wilmington DE

As you can see above, in 1863 the unit had the opportunity to purchase both sack coats and frock coats. The lined and unlined blouses are probably the normal 5 button sack coat and I believe that the uniform coat is the 7 button frock coat. The shoes are listed as sewn or pegged soles, thus the belief that all army boots were pegged is incorrect. Finally, at least some of the members of the unit wore leggings. In looking at the accounts of individual soldiers, a few did actually purchase the leggings. In the same book is a 1864 list of prices that lists forage caps.
